A sinkhole on the runway at LaGuardia Airport is causing delays Wednesday, airport officials said.
Port Authority officials were doing routine inspections Wednesday when they discovered a sinkhole about 11 a.m. near Runway 4/22, according to a statement from the airport.
The runway was shut down and emergency construction and engineering crews responded to start repairs. Officials did not say what caused the sinkhole, but said crews would make repairs “as quickly and safely as possible.”
Airlines and travelers were advised to expect delays and flight cancellations. LaGuardia reported 191 delays and 196 cancellations as of 2:45 p.m. Wednesday
Thunderstorms are also expected Wednesday evening.
