KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WCHS) — May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time dedicated to encouraging conversations about emotional well-being and breaking the stigma surrounding mental health struggles.
Helping lead that conversation in West Virginia is Emma Griffith, a representative of the Josh Merriman Foundation and the current Miss Ohio Valley.

Emma is preparing to compete in the upcoming Miss West Virginia Competition this June, but her mission extends far beyond the stage.
Across the state, she is advocating for mental health awareness in athletes and encouraging young people to speak openly about the challenges they face.

The Josh Merriman Foundation is dedicated to raising awareness about mental health and suicide prevention while supporting individuals, families and communities across West Virginia through education, advocacy and outreach.
Athletes often experience intense pressure, stress, anxiety and emotional struggles that can go unnoticed.
Griffith’s advocacy focuses on reminding athletes that mental health is just as important as physical health and that seeking support is a sign of strength, not weakness.
Through school visits, community outreach, and public speaking events, Griffith continues to inspire conversations that help break barriers surrounding mental wellness. Her work with the Josh Merriman Foundation aims to create safer, more supportive environments for athletes and young people throughout West Virginia.

As Mental Health Awareness Month continues, Griffith hopes her message encourages others to check in on themselves and those around them, reminding everyone that no one has to struggle alone.
