WASHINGTON (7News) — Learning and growing.

That’s been the theme in the early part of the season for Washington Mystics rookie center Lauren Betts.

The UCLA product is coming off the best statistical game of her young WNBA career during Monday’s loss to the Dallas Wings. Betts scored 11 points with three rebounds over 15 minutes off the bench.

7News Sports Director Scott Abraham spoke with Betts after Thursday’s practice about building on her most recent performance.

“I thought it was just a really good opportunity for me to go out and compete. I was taking advantage of the minutes. I think for me just staying present, continue to learn and grow and just staying consistent in how I compete is going to help me moving forward,” Betts told Abraham. “Just trying to step up in my role and do whatever the team needs. It’s a different style of play and you’re playing against a lot of established women that have played in the W for a really long time. Just trying to learn and stay really focused on my process has been really helpful.”

Making that transition from college ball to the WNBA is never an easy one.

Back in April, Betts led UCLA to an NCAA Title and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. Days later, Washington drafted Betts fourth overall in the WNBA Draft.

Mystics head coach Sydney Johnson told Abraham that he has seen significant progress in Betts’ game since Betts joined the team last month.

“She needs time and it’s coming. It’s coming and it’s really exciting to see,” Johnson said. “Once that all falls into place like it’s second nature, then you’re going to see her best, and then you’re certainly going to see a better Mystics team.”

The Mystics continue their road trip on Sunday in Seattle. Their game against the Storm will tip off at 6 p.m.
