WASHINGTON (7News) — A gunman has died after opening fire on Secret Service personnel outside the White House on Saturday, just after 6 p.m.
Two people were shot, the gunman and a bystander, in the area of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, Northwest, according to the Secret Service.
The agency said the shooter pulled a gun from a bag and began firing shots.
Secret Service officers returned fire, hitting the gunman.
The agency said the shooter was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The bystander was reported in critical condition.
No Secret Service personnel were hurt in the gunfire.
The Associated Press has identified the gunman as 21-year-old Nasire Best. We are working to learn more about him.
FBI Director Kash Patel shared on X, “FBI is on the scene and supporting Secret Service responding to shots fired near White House grounds – we will update the public as we’re able.”
President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time. The gunfire comes nearly a month after what law enforcement authorities said was an attempted assassination of Trump at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner.

She writes on X that she was “in the middle of taping on my iPhone for a social video from the White House North Lawn when we heard the shots. It sounded like dozens of gunshots. We were told to sprint to the press briefing room where we are holding now.”
News crews were told to take cover.
