Gregg Olsen, author of “Out of the Woods,” discussed his latest book, which delves into the harrowing experience and survival of Shasta Groene. The book reveals new insights into Groene’s life, both during and after her kidnapping nearly 20 years ago.

Olsen emphasized the unique perspective the book offers by sharing Groene’s story in her own words. “What’s different here is that we’re hearing from the person who is central to the entire story,” he said.

Groene survived a traumatic kidnapping at the age of eight. Olsen shared that her story is a testament to her resilience, highlighting how her challenging upbringing prepared her to endure the ordeal. “She had experienced this before the kidnapping,” Olsen noted, explaining that her past struggles contributed to her survival instincts.

The book also explores Groene’s recovery journey, including her time in therapy in Utah. Olsen structured the narrative to reflect the ongoing process of healing from trauma. “Surviving trauma is a lifetime endeavor,” he stated.

Olsen’s work sheds light on the complexities of Groene’s experiences, including the survivor’s guilt she continues to carry. “That survivor’s guilt is going to be there for the rest of her life,” he said.

The book aims to give readers a deeper understanding of trauma and resilience, urging them to listen and support those who share their stories. “We have to hear it. It’s important for us to be the listeners because that helps us help them heal,” Olsen emphasized.

Gregg Olsen and Shasta Groene will be at The Well Read Moose in Coeur d’Alen for a book signing on Friday, August 8th, from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm.

Olsen’s asks those who come to see her to come with love for her. “She has lived through things that none of us can imagine. You read the book, you’ll get an inkling of what it’s like, but you don’t get all of it because it’s not your story. It’s not you. So be kind, be respectful and bring the love because she deserves it.”
