Tummy is a stoic Great Pyrenees and Anatolian Shepherd mix who never hesitates to lend a helping paw, whether she’s helping Mom @meghanwillow with the horses or with keeping the bed warm. On July 31, however, Tummy took her role as livestock guardian dog especially seriously.
This massive dog never makes noise, but her mom woke up to the sound of barking that summer morning. Although Meghan didn’t put the pieces together until after she woke up and saw the clues, it didn’t take long for her to realize that her normally quiet dog protected her from a potentially life-threatening situation.

That’s a huge black bear! These wild animals aren’t exactly rare near Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, where Meghan and her family live, but seeing a bear so close to your home is unsettling nonetheless. Luckily, Tummy was looking out for her at all hours of the night!

Just when Meghan took a sigh of relief, she noticed a small detail that made her realize just how close the bear had gotten to breaking into her home.

OMG, the sneaky bear stole the stuffed animal from inside Meghan’s bedroom! It had to tear off the window screen to get to the goods, but that proved to be no problem. Depending on where Meghan’s bed is, that bear was merely feet, perhaps inches, away from her!
Knowing the bear was so close makes Tummy’s bravery even more impressive. Plenty of dogs are all bark and no bite, but this strong Great Pyrenees didn’t back down. This is just one example of how guardian dogs like her literally save lives!
Because she lives near a National Park, Meghan had to report this bear encounter to her local wildlife services team. Even they were impressed with the audacity of the bear, but not nearly as impressed as they were with the hero of the day.

What a hero! The black bear also tried breaking into cars in the area, but everyone was on high alert after Tummy rang the alarm bells. Thanks to her, everyone was safe and calm!
Black Bear Encounters
Bears may be formidable predators and elusive creatures, but they also aren’t afraid to share space with people. In places like Lake Tahoe, where black bears are everywhere, you can even see bears sauntering down the street!
Being mindful and following proper food and garbage storage practices will keep anyone safe in bear country. Bear spray can be a crucial last resort if you’re ever charged by a bear, but fortunately, these animals want to avoid an interaction just as much as you do.
