A mountain lion was seen in the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center, according to the Storey County Sheriff’s Office.
Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) officials shared information about mountain lions after this sighting. They say that mountain lions are native to Nevada and can occasionally be found near communities, industrial areas and other developed landscapes. While sightings can be surprising, mountain lions generally avoid people and are an important part of Nevada’s wildlife heritage.
NDOW encourages the public to keep the following safety information in mind:
Do not run if you encounter a mountain lion.Make yourself appear larger.Maintain eye contact and slowly back away.Pick up small children immediately.Never approach a mountain lion, especially one feeding or with kittens.
Officials say that as Nevada continues to grow and development expands into wildlife habitat, occasional wildlife encounters are expected.
