BLACKWOOD, NJ — New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill joined Cooper Health leadership as well as local and state leaders in Blackwood this morning to announce a major investment by Cooper University Health Care: a new $300 million multispecialty outpatient medical campus planned for Gloucester Township.
The nearly 184,000-square-foot, five-story facility will be constructed on 39 acres of undeveloped land along Route 42 and the Black Horse Pike, immediately adjacent to the Gloucester Premium Outlets.
Once completed, the state-of-the-art outpatient center will surpass Cooper’s Moorestown campus in size, becoming the health system’s largest ambulatory care campus.
“This new campus represents Cooper’s continued commitment to investing in the health and well-being of the communities we serve,” said George E. Norcross III, chairman of the Cooper University Health Care Board of Trustees. “As South Jersey continues to grow, so does the need for greater access to high-quality specialty care close to home. This project will transform health care access in the region while creating hundreds of jobs and generating long-term economic growth for Gloucester Township and surrounding communities.”
I attended the announcement in Blackwood, where remarks were also delivered by Cooper Board Chairman George Norcross, State Senator Paul Moriarty, Gloucester Township Mayor Dave Mayer, County Commissioner Louis Cappelli Jr., and other local officials.
A key theme throughout the event was the challenge South Jersey families face in accessing quality health care while balancing busy work and family schedules. Governor Sherrill shared recent experiences from her own family, describing the difficulties of coordinating medical appointments while maintaining demanding professional responsibilities…. yes even the Governor has to adjust her work schedule to bring her family to quality healthcare!
The new Gloucester Township campus is designed to help address those challenges in the 42Freeway area, with plans for extended operating hours, including evenings and weekends, providing patients with greater flexibility and access to care.

Project Timeline
While Cooper unveiled an exterior rendering of the facility, the full design process is only beginning and is expected to continue through 2027.

State and local approvals anticipated by Fall 2027
Construction beginning shortly thereafter
Completion targeted for late 2028
A grand opening celebration and first patient visits expected in Spring 2029
Planned Services and Features
The Gloucester Township Medical Campus is expected to include:
Advanced specialty exam suites for cardiology, neurology, oncology, OB-GYN, orthopaedics, urology, pulmonary, pain management, and additional specialties.
An MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper suite featuring radiation oncology and infusion services.
A next-generation radiology suite equipped with advanced diagnostic imaging technology.
A dedicated procedural suite for digestive health.
A modern ambulatory surgery center designed for seamless outpatient care.
South Jersey Continues to Experience Major Health Care Growth
State Senator Moriarty also highlighted the significant residential and commercial growth occurring throughout Camden County and the surrounding region, noting that increasing population levels are driving demand for expanded health care infrastructure.
The Cooper project is part of a broader wave of health care investment across South Jersey.
In early 2025, Cooper broke ground on its Phase One Tower in Camden, part of a larger $3 billion expansion initiative. The health system has also transformed the former Sears department store at the Moorestown Mall into a major medical facility.

Meanwhile, Inspira Health opened a new hospital in Mullica Hill and soon afterward launched a $250 million expansion project at that campus. Inspira has also developed a medical campus in Deptford by converting a former sporting goods store into a healthcare center, while adding a satellite emergency department and adult behavioral health facility in Woodbury.
Over in Camden, Virtua has a $500 Million project at Our Lady Of Lourdes Hospital to develop a six-story patient pavilion addition and other renovations.
As South Jersey’s population continues to grow, healthcare providers are making substantial investments to ensure residents have convenient access to advanced medical services close to home. Cooper’s planned Gloucester Township Medical Campus represents one of the region’s largest healthcare development projects and is expected to become a major medical destination when it opens in 2029.
