A 10-foot-long alligator was removed from Eagle Mountain Lake by Texas Parks and Wildlife and Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge personnel on Thursday morning, according to a county commissioner’s post.
The adult male alligator weighed in at 291.8 pounds and was 10 feet, 7 inches long. Lerrin Johnson, a Texas Parks and Wildlife spokesperson, said it had been spotted multiple times in the area before officials were able to capture it.
County Commissioner Manny Ramirez shared a video of the allIgator on X.
It was measured, tagged and relocated to “a protected, more remote location,” Johnson said. The relocation is part of the permitted research at the Fort Worth Nature Center.
The nature center has been researching alligators native to Fort Worth for the past three years. Part of that research is capturing, tagging and monitoring the animals. There are about 40 tagged alligators at the nature center.
Johnson said finding an alligator within the proximity presented a valuable opportunity for the researchers to better understand the species.
