The two-game West Coast road trip did not go as the Indiana Fever had hoped, as they fell 90-88 to the Valkyries and 100-84 to the Fire. As a result, Caitlin Clark and her teammates currently hold a 4-4 record, having suffered two consecutive losses.
Despite this losing streak, head coach Stephanie White believes this challenging period has also provided valuable lessons for a young roster.
White Sees an Opportunity for Growth in Adversity
The Fever has a core led by players like Clark, Aliyah Boston, and Kelsey Mitchell, whom the franchise continues to rely on and trust to establish itself among the league’s contenders.
At Wednesday’s press conference, the 48-year-old coach was asked specifically about the role and performance of the team’s leaders, to which White noted that adversity has allowed voices within the group to emerge that previously didn’t participate as much, and that some players are learning to take on greater responsibilities and become leaders:
“Yeah, I mean, I think that there are voices that we are hearing that may not have spoken up before that I think is really, really good,” White said. “You know, there are players who are learning to get outside of themselves when things aren’t going well for them to be a better leader.”
“You know, oftentimes, it’s a human nature, right? If you’re struggling or you’re going through something, you sort of internalize everything,” she added.
In addition, the coach explained that one of the most important lessons for the team is understanding that the best way to overcome individual difficulties is to support one another. In that regard, she noted that the players are learning to focus more on their teammates and the team as a whole to move forward:
“I think the best way to get yourself going is to pour into your teammates, to pour into one another. And so we’re learning how to do that,” White added. “I mean, you know, our core group is pretty young, so to speak, and learning how to go through some of these ups and downs, you know, is important.”
After a rough start to the season, in which they lost two of their first three games, Indiana bounced back with three straight wins. However, they’ve now lost two in a row.
Now, they’ll look to turn things around this Thursday, June 4, at 7:00 PM, when they host the Atlanta Dream—led by Angel Reese—at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
