Cairo, Egypt – June 9, 2026 – U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Robert Silverman made his first official visit to Alexandria June 7-8 to strengthen the economic and cultural ties between the United States and the people of Alexandria, the second largest city in Egypt with a population of over six million and Egypt’s largest port. He was joined by his spouse, Mrs. Young-mi Silverman, and a delegation from the U.S. Embassy Cairo.

CDA Silverman’s visit included a meeting with Alexandria Governor Engineer Ayman Ateyya. The two leaders discussed opportunities to work together to increase trade with the U.S. and port development in Egypt.

CDA Silverman also attended a ceremony to open a major expansion of the Coca-Cola bottling plant in Alexandria; he signed a Memorandum of Understanding on behalf of the U.S. government to formalize an American Corner hosted by the educational foundation Amideast in their Alexandria headquarters. The American Corner is a library and information resource open to the public, staffed by U.S. employees. It is a tangible example of U.S. commitment to engaging with the people of Alexandria.

While in Alexandria, CDA Silverman met with religious leaders representing Alexandria’s minority communities. He also visited the Graeco-Roman Museum and Bibliotheca Alexandrina, two major cultural institutions with ties to the U.S. government.

“Alexandria is the largest city on the Mediterranean Sea, with a long history of trade that for centuries attracted peoples from all over the region. Today this city and Egypt’s northern coast is becoming the energy hub of the eastern Mediterranean, making it a natural partner for American businesses,” said Chargé d’Affaires Silverman. “My wife and I look forward to returning to visit the “Bride of the Mediterranean” soon, to build on the excellent economic and cultural ties between our two countries.”
