Rochester, N.Y. — The Seneca Park Zoo is highlighting a behavioral training success story, commending its staff and baboons for their actions after a large tree limb fell into a habitat earlier this week.

The incident Monday prompted a brief hold-in-place and evacuation of the zoo, which closed early. The fallen limb damaged part of the protective netting above the exhibit, but no people or animals were hurt.

The zoo said two male baboons actually went to the staff and voluntarily presented their hips to be sedated when the incident was unfolding. The zoo said this is a response to cues they have practiced in the past through behavioral training.

The story here isn’t about a fallen tree,” the zoo said. “It’s about trust, care, and the extraordinary relationships that make conservation care possible.Comment with Bubbles

The zoo previously said the baboons will not return to their habitat until the netting is repaired.
