A man who shot and killed a woman is dead after a police shooting on a Metro bus stopped along Wisconsin Avenue in Northwest D.C. on Tuesday morning.

This all started around 7:10 a.m., according to police, in the area of Wisconsin Avenue and Porter Street, Northwest, near the Washington Ballet and Sidwell Friends School. Investigators said the man shot the victim, with whom he had a previous relationship, and then got onto a bus. When officers arrived, witnesses provided a description of the suspect.

Officers stopped the bus in the area of Wisconsin Avenue and Upton Street, Northwest. Police said the two officers got onto the bus and evacuated passengers as they identified the gunman.
“As they approached him, he began making movements with his hand to a bag,” Carroll said. “They told him to stop making those movements. The suspect then pulled a firearm out of that bag, brought it up, pointed it in the direction of an officer, and two MPD officers discharged their firearms, striking the individual who had the gun, also striking the gun that was in his hand.”
Carroll said the firearm the man carried had an extended magazine, increasing the potential danger. “There was the potential for a lot of ammunition to be in that gun,” he said.
Authorities shut down Wisconsin Avenue in both directions for several hours as investigators processed the scene. The suspect’s body remained on the bus during the initial stages of the investigation.
Police said the man had a history of arrests for domestic violence in the District and was previously in a relationship with the victim.

“We do know there was a prior domestic relationship between the victim that was killed here down the block and the suspect,” Carroll said.
Officials described the case as part of a troubling pattern of domestic violence in the city.
“This is a very tragic situation,” Carroll said. “This year, we’ve had multiple high-profile domestic violence incidents. Here in the 2nd District, this is the second domestic homicide involving individuals.”
The investigation remains ongoing.

The officer-involved shooting remains under investigation, which is standard procedure in cases involving police use of force.
Metro Transit also posted that it is assisting with the investigation. The Secret Service was on scene as well. The agency said officers responded to the area due to its proximity to the embassies.
