The age-old debate of NASCAR vs. Formula 1 has taken a new twist.

Recently, a group of F1 drivers sat down with WIRED to answer some fun fan questions. They decided to comment on the everlasting debate between the two sports. With fans constantly comparing the two motorsports series, this interview allowed these talented Formula 1 drivers to address the debate. One of them was Alex Albon, who had a cheeky answer to the fan’s question.

Alex Albon and Others Address the F1 vs NASCAR Debate

Albon, who races for Williams in F1, made it pretty clear during the chat that nobody amongst them was throwing shade at NASCAR.

After reading a fan’s question, “Why is F1 better than NASCAR? “ he replied, “We didn’t say that. That’s what you put in our mouths.” Fellow drivers Liam Lawson and Esteban Ocon chimed in from behind, saying that they loved NASCAR.

Carlos Sainz, in particular, pointed out that F1 is better for him since it is much faster. He said, “My only reason why I would say F1 is better than NASCAR, is because it’s way faster. And the faster for me, the better. But I respect NASCAR drivers and what they do, and I think it is a great motorsport to watch also.”

Lawson also mentioned that NASCAR is different from F1. He admitted, “I think it’s just different. We can’t take as many curbs as NASCAR. I would love to take like the last chicane in Canada.”

None of these talented drivers had anything negative to say about their American counterparts. It is safe to say that the debate exists only among the fans and not among those actually involved in the sport.

NASCAR vs F1: Two Different Motorsport Worlds

It’s easy to see why the two sports are compared so often. NASCAR is the king of American motorsports, with its oval tracks, stock cars, and close battles. On the other hand, Formula 1 is famous globally, with races held in multiple countries.

NASCAR is focused on intense door-to-door racing, while F1 is built around advanced aerodynamics and fast technical circuits. However, both are packed with talent, drama, and serious competition.

The F1 movie and Netflix’s ‘Drive to Survive’ have certainly attracted more American audiences to Formula 1, leading to all these comparisons and debates. Fans tend to have their favourites, and there’s nothing wrong with loving more than one motorsport series.

However, as the F1 drivers mentioned in the interview, they have a lot of respect for NASCAR. It is a reminder for fans that there does need to be a comparison between the two, and both could be enjoyed at the same time.
