RICHMOND, Vt. (WCAX) – A new radio station is fundraising to reach listeners in Richmond, Underhill and Jericho.
WRUJ is a new online radio program operated by Mount Mansfield Community Television. For 24 hours, the station is going analog and only spinning vinyl on its online stream with the hopes of getting donations.
The station has been approved to air by the Federal Communications Commission but does not yet have the funds for a radio antenna to send out its signal to listeners. With streaming services increasingly pushing out local radio, WRUJ says this is a way to preserve local media.
“You know in a time when everyone is switching the way they watch and listen to things, the airband for radio, for television, for internet is like really valuable, and we just want to make sure that we can hold on to a piece of it,” said Angelike Contis, executive director of Mount Mansfield Community Television.
The WRUJ vinyl-a-thon is going all night until 1 p.m. Sunday. Listeners cannot tune in on car radios yet but can listen at wruj.org.
