Royals to reevaluate Bobby Witt Jr. ahead of Monday’s game

  • June 21, 2026

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. did not play in Sunday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals.

The team said he suffered a grade-1 MCL sprain Thursday night, according to the Associated Press. He left at the end of the fourth inning after fielding a ground ball earlier in the game.

Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said Witt would be out of the lineup Friday. The Royals did not play Saturday because of the World Cup match between Ecuador and Curaçao that was played across the parking lot at Kansas City Stadium.

Quatraro previously said he was hopeful that Witt could return for Sunday’s game. That did not happen.

Anne Rogers with MLB.com reported that Quatraro said Witt was feeling and moving better on Sunday. The report also said Witt will get treatment before he is reevaluated ahead of Monday’s game.

The Royals head to Tampa Bay for a four-game series.
