The Sylva Fire Department was the first on the scene, where crews discovered an oil spill of 1,000 gallons of #4 motor oil on Macktown Road.

Sylva Fire Chief Mike Beck requested help from Jackson County Emergency Management and its hazardous materials response trailer.

“After meeting with the facility manager where the spill originated, it is estimated that more than 1,000 gallons of #4 motor oil may have been released,” Holland said.

Crews cleaned the area and reopened Macktown Road.
