MONTREAL (WCAX) – Heavy rainfall caused major flooding in several parts of Montreal over the weekend, leaving widespread damage.
More than 21,000 customers were without power Saturday evening following severe thunderstorms.
The flooding overwhelmed the sewer system in some parts of the city, turning streets into lakes. A number of major streets were closed.
Officials across the West Island advised people to limit their water use– like showers and washing machines– to avoid further sewer backups.
The city temporarily closed down many buildings, including a library and cultural center.
