KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Officers with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) are investigating the scene surrounding a halted Amtrak train near Western Michigan University’s main campus.
News Channel 3 crews on scene saw multiple public safety officers and the Kalamazoo Forensics Crime Lab at the tracks along Stadium Drive, just east of the railroad crossing at the intersection of Oliver Street.
The area was taped off with crime scene tape as law enforcement appeared to search the tracks below the train.
News Channel 3 crews say they saw investigators moving what appeared to be a fully intact bicycle from near the tracks into the crime lab van.
The stopped train, an Amtrak Midwest Siemens SC-44 Charger #4603, appeared to be filled with passengers.
An LED ticker read ‘Route 354’ on the side of the train, which according to Amtrak’s website is a daily eastbound passenger train that departs Chicago (CHI) in the late afternoon and travels through Michigan, stopping at the Kalamazoo Transportation Center, before heading toward Detroit.
The train pulled away from the scene around 10:50 pm, while KDPS and the crime lab were still on scene investigating when our crews departed around 11:45 pm.
News Channel 3 has reached out to KDPS for information about what happened and when the incident was called into 911.
Our crews have also reached out directly to Amtrak, whose officials tell us they’re working to gather more information about what happened.
