The Portland Fire disappeared down the stretch in a 101-78 loss in Chicago on Wednesday night.
Portland was within a point midway through the third quarter when Chicago broke the game open with a 12-point surge in less than two minutes of play. The Fire chased from double digits behind the rest of the way.
Rookie Gabriela Jaquez converted a layup to push the margin past 20 points with 7:12 to play.
The Sky had seven players score in double figures.
Megan Gustafson led the Fire with 17 points.
Portland jumped to the early lead on back-to-back 3-pointers by Gustafson and Emily Engstler on the team’s first two trips down the floor. But Chicago reclaimed the lead on a Natasha Cloud triple late in the first quarter.
Portland (8-10) gets a rematch in Chicago (5-12) on Friday before traveling to Washington D.C. for a Sunday afternoon game.
