Big Brother fans are reeling after Season 27 houseguest Ashley Hollis made a history-making move. During the live show on August 7, Hollis attempted to change her vote to evict after conferring with two other players in the Diary Room hallway.
In a post-show video posted to Instagram, Big Brother host Julie Chen Moonves revealed that nothing like that has ever happened in 25 years of the CBS reality competition.
“I am still recovering from tonight’s live eviction show,” Chen said shortly after the episode aired. “The voting ceremony alone, we have never had that kind of chaos, and it’s a first. Expect the unexpected.”
Fans reacted in the comment section. Some expressed concern over the houseguests talking behind closed doors.
“I am concerned about the talking in the hallway. I feel like that could cause major problems in the future,” one fan wrote on Instagram.
“It was interesting and it made everybody gasp, but it could really hurt the integrity of the voting,” another agreed.
“I’ve been watching since season one – I am obsessed and I watch the feeds. I’ve never seen anything like it,” a third fan wrote.
“Well Ashley made big brother history tonight, been watching since beginning & never saw someone run in to change vote,” added another.
Others suggested that anyone who changes their vote “should forfeit their chance at the next [Head of Household].”
Julie Chen Moonves Shut Things Down on Live TV
During the Week 4 live eviction episode, the houseguests were tasked with voting out Kelley Jorgensen or Jimmy Heagerty. Big Brother veteran Rachel Reilly attempted to rally enough votes to save Heagerty, blatantly instructing everyone to follow her lead moments before the live vote.
After casting her vote for Jorgensen to go home, Reilly stopped incoming voter Hollis in the hallway, where she once again told her what to do. Hollis appeared very confused when she entered the Diary Room, and she fumbled as she said, “I vote to evict – oh my gosh, I’m sorry. I don’t know what to do. I vote to evict Kelley. I don’t know. … I don’t know what I’m doing.”
Hollis ran into the next voter, Will Williams, in the hallway, where she seemingly told him how she voted. Williams waved his hands in protest, and Hollis ran back into the Diary Room to change her vote.
“I’m so sorry,” she said. “I messed up. I vote to evict Jimmy. I messed up. Sorry.”
But Chen Moonves was not having it. As the screen went blank, the longtime CBS host was heard saying, “No, no, no, no.”
In the end, Chen Moonves announced to viewers that only Hollis’s first vote to evict Jorgensen would count. Heagerty was eliminated from the Big Brother game by a vote of 9 to 2.
