(WJAR) — Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee issued a statewide drought watch upon recommendation by the state’s Drought Steering Committee.

The drought watch was the first one declared for the state since 2002.

The Department of Administration said the watch is the second of four progressive declarations: 1) advisory, 2) watch, 3) warning, and 4) emergency.

The steering committee said that precipitation deficits extending back to June 2025, record breaking low and steadily worsening streamflows, and rapidly declining groundwater levels across the state contributed to the declaration.
