“Supergirl” is the talk of the town right now and not in a good way. The newest film in James Gunn’s DC Universe has been met with lukewarm reviews and is expected to be a major flop at the box office.
While Milly Alcock has been praised for her performance in the titular role, there have been a lot of criticisms leveled at the film. One of the big ones is regarding song choices.

Near the end of the film, there’s a needle drop that everybody seems to have an opinion on. The song is “The Middle” by Jimmy Eat World, which is a popular song, but it’s a cover. The cover is slowed down and features female vocals. Many fans feel like the song choice was poorly placed and doesn’t fit what’s happening in the scene.
According to director Craig Gillespie, they tested many different songs, but Gunn was the one who decided to choose the cover of “The Middle.”
“That was probably the biggest discussion,” Gillespie told Rolling Stone. “And it was down to the very last week, and I gotta credit James Gunn for that one.”
One of the things that Gunn has been praised for most in his career is his knack for being able to find the right song for the right scene. This time, he seems to have dropped the ball. It’s not a surprise that Gillespie would rely on Gunn for that creative choice, but perhaps he could’ve been a bit more critical.
However, “The Middle” isn’t what makes or breaks the movie. There are many problems prior to that needle drop. Gunn’s DCU is already on the ropes so early during his tenure as the president. Paramount may seriously consider a change if there aren’t more signs of life soon.
