Joanna Carson, a former fashion model who was once married to famous late-night TV host Johnny Carson, has died at the age of 93, according to reports.
Joanna Carson was Carson’s third wife – not to be confused with Joanne Carson, his second wife. The couple married in 1972 and were together for a decade before their divorce.
She died in July, according to the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, which cited the news from “friends online.” The organization wrote in remembrance of the model and socialite on July 30, saying she embodied Taylor’s “spirit of love and support.”
Johnny Carson met Joanna Carson in 1971 at a night club in New York, where he told People that he was “flirting like a sophomore.”
Joanna Carson, according to People, was one of the city’s “highest-paid models.” She had been divorced for several years and was living with her son in a small apartment.
“The third Mrs. Carson is the kind of woman, bright and molto simpatica, whom you would expect to meet not in Bel Air but at a cultural soiree in Rome, where—as like as not—she would be more than holding her own against the earnest platonic advances of Michelangelo Antonioni,” the New Yorker wrote in 1978.
Johnny and Joanna Carson’s marriage started to fall apart after “The Tonight Show” moved to California, according to People. She spoke about Johnny Carson’s drinking in the biography Carson the Magnificent.
They divorced in 1985 after reaching a $20 million settlement, according to Extra TV.
“If I had given as much to marriage as I gave to The Tonight Show, I’d probably have a hell of a marriage,” he told People.
Joanna Carson did not remarry after her divorce. She had a close friendship with writer Truman Capote and the actress Elizabeth Taylor.
She is preceded in death by her son, actor Joe Holland, who died in 1994 at the age of 32.
Johnny Carson died in 2005 at the age of 79. His son Christopher Carson, whom he shared with his first wife, died earlier this year, according to reports.
