“The View” looked a little different on Monday, July 6.
Three co-hosts were absent because of weather-related travel disruptions, but it was Whoopi Goldberg’s excuse that topped them all: A volcano erupted during her vacation in Italy.
“You may be asking, ‘Why am I here on a Monday?’ I asked myself the same question,” Joy Behar quipped on the ABC talk show, explaining that executive producer Brian Teta “begged me to come in” after a series of unexpected events kept Ana Navarro, Sara Haines and Goldberg away from the desk. The show airs live from New York City.
Behar, who typically appears on the show Tuesday through Friday, filled in on her usual day off.
Navarro told fans on Instagram that her American Airlines flight had been canceled, leaving her in Miami.

“I gave it my best shot, but the weather and airline gods did not cooperate,” she said on Sunday, July 5. “There was a ground stop in NYC tonight, and weather up the East Coast.”
Meanwhile, Haines was “dealing with storm damage,” Behar said. “And Whoopi is using the old volcano excuse.”
Goldberg appeared in a video explaining that her travel plans had been upended as Mount Etna entered its ninth consecutive day of volcanic activity.
“I am in Sicily right now, and Mount Etna, which is one of our active volcanoes here in Italy, decided to go off today,” Goldberg said. “We have spent most of the day trying to get back to the United States, and all of the airports are closed here, so I will be back as soon as I can.”
She added that she knows “all sorts of stories about our different vacations.”
“Well, I think my story takes the cake,” she said. “A volcano ate my homework.”
Joining Behar at the table on Monday were fixtures Sunny Hostin and Alyssa Farah Griffin, and guest co-host Michelle Buteau, who was originally scheduled to appear as just a guest.
“This is the best booty call I’ve ever had,” Buteau joked. “I was supposed to be a guest on the show. Now I’m a host. This is not how I thought it would happen, but I’m so glad it did. A volcano had to go off before you asked me to come. I love it.”
The comedian is currently promoting the final season of Netflix’s “Survival of the Thickest.” Buteau reflected on filming one of the series’ most poignant storylines, which centers on infertility.
“I really wanted people to feel less alone, so it really was digging deep for what those real raw emotions are … and also for their friend group and family to see what they could do and how they can be there for somebody,” she said, recalling her own experience “going through IVF for five years and four losses and having no one to talk to.”
