Michigan landed the No. 1 overall prospect in the 2025 recruiting class in quarterback Bryce Underwood, who hailed from Metro Detroit. Looking ahead to the 2029 cycle, the Wolverines are closely eyeing another in-state signal caller.

Case Campbell, out of Saline (Mich.) High, is the son of 1997 national champion Mark Campbell. Currently, the local Big Ten school is an early offer for the sophomore alongside Kentucky and Miami (OH), as the list will surely grow once the fall season gets underway.

“It’s awesome,” Campbell told Maize n Brew. “Like, this is my journey. My pops was obviously successful, my brother is successful in kicking butt at Bowling Green, but this is my journey. This is what I’m rocking with.
That mindset is staying on this path. I want to be the best player in the nation. Just consistently working, consistently going to Brad Maendler, my quarterback coach. Never having a mindset like, ‘Yeah, I got this. 
I got Michigan. I’m good, I’m good.’ Just staying consistent.
I think it’s more important for who you are off the field. Especially at the quarterback position, being a leader is one of my biggest qualities, and one of the qualities that I will keep the rest of my life.”

Football runs in the family for the Campbell’s, as Mark played 10 seasons in the NFL following his college career. Now, he is taking on the role of helping his youngest son undergo the process and help him be in the same spot he once was 30 years ago.

“My dad’s my right-hand man,” Campbell said. “He’s a huge goofball, that’s where I get it from. But he’s my advice guy. On the mental side, on the physical side, he tells me what to do and stuff like that. My older brother (Caden), he’s like my best bud. I could talk to him because he’s out (doing) college life. … So him having that experience, he can be like, ‘Hey, Case, you think high school’s different? 
Wait until you get to college.’ That sort of stuff kind of ticks in my head to prepare me for the future.”

Michigan quarterbacks coach Koy Detmer Jr. and offensive coordinator Jason Beck offered Campbell less than a month after he took in spring camp practice this past March.

“It is really awesome, but like I said, there’s plenty more to come,” Campbell said. “But that coaching staff over there is super duper cool, I love that coaching staff. I recently went to the Chad Tough event with Tammy and Jason Carr, the Carr family, I saw coach Beck and coach Koy and they were awesome. It was like my family. Those guys are really, really cool.”

Campbell attends the same school that produced Michigan freshman quarterback Tommy Carr. Both the latter and Underwood grew up in the area like Campbell, who’s looking forward to seeing the pair continue their development.

“I’m rooting for Tommy, and they just got to battle it out and figure it out,” Campbell said. “They make each other better every single day. Tommy is a really cool kid. He can spin it, he can do everything that Bryce can do, but it’s just down to (their mentalities) that’s going to decide it.”

Rankings for the 2029 class have yet to be released by the major recruiting services, but Campbell was named as one of seven quarterback in the class on Rivals’ Midwest Regional Watch List.

“I do not have an ego whatsoever because I know it’s all work ethic, but I could see myself being the best player in the nation by my senior year,” Campbell said. “That’s just how I’m made, that’s just how I’m built. I understand the work to get to it and how much effort and energy you have to put in and the sacrifice. But like I said, my journey’s different. I can look at those guys and sort of be like, ‘Damn, I wish I could get there.’ But I don’t think that way. Like, those guys’ journeys are their journeys, I’m just on this path and focusing on what I can do at that moment.

“I talk so much about ego and confidence and stuff like that, but I just really keep being me. I really enjoy the process. You get kids that can get burn out of football; I love when I lose because I just want it more. I love when I win because I just want it more. So having that mindset is one of the strongest things you can have, especially at the quarterback position. Good or bad, you’re going to get feedback from it. Having that mindset and what you are built on and your foundation of it, I think is huge and that’s what I’m rocking with.”
