Kansas Athletics is making history with a new partnership that brings cryptocurrency to the forefront of college sports. On Wednesday, the school announced a multi-year agreement with Ripple, making it the first major college athletics program to feature a cryptocurrency logo on its team uniforms.

As part of the deal, the XRP logo will appear as a jersey patch across all Kansas Athletics teams. The partnership was announced in collaboration with Learfield and represents another step forward as schools continue exploring new revenue streams in the evolving college athletics landscape.

“This era of college athletics demands innovative, forward-thinking partnerships,” Kansas athletic director Travis Goff said in a statement. “Ripple recognizes the unique reach and passion of the Jayhawk community, and we’re proud they have chosen Kansas Athletics as a premier platform to introduce XRP to millions of sports fans. Having the XRP logo displayed on our Jayhawk uniforms reflects a shared commitment to innovation and excellence.”

According to the release, XRP is a cryptocurrency designed to move money around the world in seconds while reducing the costs associated with traditional banking systems. The jersey patch marks the first time a cryptocurrency brand has been integrated onto the uniforms of a major college athletics program.

Moreover, the announcement comes just one day after the Big 12 unveiled its own groundbreaking commercial partnership. During Big 12 Media Days, commissioner Brett Yormark announced a league-wide sponsorship agreement with Monster Energy that includes co-branded conference patches on all football and men’s and women’s basketball uniforms.

That agreement, which is reportedly worth roughly $20 million annually according to Sports Business Journal, also places the Monster Energy and Big 12 logo on every conference football field and basketball court. Each Big 12 member institution is expected to receive approximately $1 million per year through the deal.

Importantly, the conference’s agreement does not prevent individual schools from securing their own jersey patch sponsorships outside of the energy drink category. That opened the door for programs such as Kansas to pursue additional commercial opportunities, resulting in Wednesday’s landmark announcement with Ripple.

Yormark has consistently emphasized expanding the conference’s commercial footprint, calling the Monster Energy partnership a first-of-its-kind agreement that reflects where college athletics is heading. Kansas is now taking that approach a step further.

By partnering with Ripple, the Jayhawks are positioning themselves at the forefront of another emerging space in college athletics. As schools continue searching for new ways to generate revenue in the revenue-sharing era, the Kansas-Ripple agreement could become a model for future partnerships between major athletic departments and companies in the digital finance industry.
