Black bear spotted along trail in Ozark, Mo.

  • July 8, 2026

OZARK, Mo. (KY3) -Ozark city officials said a black bear has been spotted along one of the city’s trails.

According to the City of Ozark, the black bear was seen along the Chadwick Flyer Trail in Ozark near Highway 65. City officials say that it is a great reminder that the city’s trails are shared with wildlife.

Ozark city officials said the photo was submitted to the Missouri Department of Conservation and posted on social media on July 4 by JJ Buckner.

MDC said the bear does not appear to be a cub because it is not relying on its mother for survival. An MDC wildlife biologist says it’s more than likely a yearling male.

Mother black bears intentionally leave their offspring when they reach about 1.5 years old. Often at this age, bears weigh between 80 and 125 pounds, according to MDC. It’s typical for male cubs to range the furthest away from their mother and often show up in unexpected places as a result.

Missouri conservationists say the good news is that most wildlife, including black bears, simply pass through an area and want nothing to do with people.

However, they say it’s important to “Be BearWise” by following these rules:

Never feed or approach bearsSecure food, garbage, and recyclingRemove bird feeders when bears are activeNever leave pet food outdoorsClean and store grills, smokersAlert neighbors to bear activity

City officials say that whether you are walking, running, or biking, stay aware of your surroundings. If you see a bear or other notable wildlife, give it plenty of room and report the sighting to MDC.
