WASHINGTON (TNND) — U.S. forces launched more military strikes against Iran on Wednesday, with U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) describing the operation as part of an effort to weaken Tehran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
CENTCOM said President Donald Trump ordered the latest round of strikes, which follow a previous attack on Tuesday.
“At the direction of the Commander in Chief, U.S. Central Command forces have started conducting additional strikes against Iran to further degrade their ability to threaten freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz,” CENTCOM wrote on X.”The United States is holding Iran accountable for recent unjustified aggression against commercial shipping and civilian crews freely navigating a vital international waterway,” CENTCOM noted.
It wasn’t immediately clear what targets — or how many — were hit.
The news comes just hours after Trump said the U.S. was prepared to “just finish the job” in Iran. He also again vowed that Iran will never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon.
“Let’s just finish the job,” Trump said during a news conference earlier on Wednesday, while praising his administration’s military campaign as “a tremendous success.”
Trump described Iran as “the bully of the Middle East” and said he believes he remains the country’s top target.
“I’m number one on their kill list,” Trump said. “They’re scum.”
Ahead of Wednesday’s strikes, the president accused Iran of acting in bad faith by attacking commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz despite expressing interest in diplomacy.
“They want to make a deal and then they go around shooting ships at night,” Trump said, describing Iran’s leaders as “a little loco” and “a little crazy.””You can’t let lunatics have nuclear weapons,” he added.
Trump also argued the U.S. military response, which started in February, was long overdue.
“What we did should have been done 47 years ago,” he said.
Speaking at an event in Wisconsin on Wednesday, Vice President JD Vance defended U.S. strikes on Iran, saying Tehran left the U.S. no choice after attacking commercial ships.
“If they try to close it down, there’s going to be a response from the American military. It’s that simple. That’s the deal,” Vance said. “It’s just going to keep on happening until they open up that lane and stop shooting at ships. It’s simple.”
