DNR warns of black bear sightings farther south as populations grow

  • July 9, 2026

MADISON, Wis. (WBAY) — The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is warning campers that black bears are appearing farther south in the state as populations grow in northern Wisconsin, including recent sightings at Mirror Lake State Park in Sauk County.

The DNR has partnered with the BearWise program and is posting new safety signs at rest areas across the state.

What attracts bears at a campsite

Officials say campers often underestimate what can draw a bear to a campsite.

The DNR said scented toothpaste, old trash, and empty beer cans are among the items that can attract bears.

The BearWise program recommends campers stay alert, remain in groups, and leave no food, trash or scraps out at a campsite.

Anything scented should be stored away from sleeping areas.

Additional safety recommendations

Experts also recommend keeping dogs leashed at all times and carrying bear spray — and knowing how to use it before heading out.

The DNR said the southward movement of black bears is not a cause for significant concern, and campers are encouraged to enjoy the outdoors safely while following BearWise guidelines to keep bears wild.
