Monday night was not a good time for Oklahoma Sooners fans to search their new quarterback on X.

New OU quarterback John Mateer went viral within minutes after a post on X surfaced that accused Mateer of gambling on college sports using Venmo, which is against NCAA rules as a student-athlete. The post was from Bryan Aguada, whose bio claims he’s an insider for Deadspin, and included screenshots that were supposedly of Mateer’s Venmo transactions that were dated for Nov. 20, 2022, nearly three years ago when Mateer was a redshirting freshman at Washington State.

🚨BREAKING🚨

Oklahoma QB John Mateer has allegedly engaged in sports betting, including on NCAA football games such as UCLA vs USC, according to Venmo transactions.

No reliable reports about the claim have surfaced since. It also all just seems like a joke. The Venmo comments literally read, “Sports Gambling (UCLA vs. USC)” and “Sports gambling.” However, USC did beat UCLA 48-45 in a college football game the day before the alleged Venmo transactions.

Aguada also posted later that Mateer apparently deleted all of his Venmo transactions after many others went digging to see for themselves.

Mateer appeared in one game that 2022 season. He was then Washington State’s backup the next year before becoming the starter last season. Mateer transferred to OU this winter with two years of eligibility left.

Mateer has said he set screen times on his phone to limit time on social media, but I’m sure this still reached him. Whether the claim has teeth or not, the accusations were all over X on Monday night and impossible to ignore.

IF* these John Mateer Venmo transactions are true 2 things can be said

1. Why would you put “sports gambling” when you are a RS FR and it’s illegal by the NCAA

2. Who the heck looks at athletes Venmo transactions from 3 seasons ago??? pic.twitter.com/eUwarmhl65

Deciding to randomly stalk your rival QB’s Venmo on a Monday night is genuinely Lex Luthor-level hatred.

Like that’s just for the love of the game.

I don’t know who else needs to hear this, but if you’re a college athlete, do NOT pay your bookie via Venmo.

This was not as funny for OU fans, though.
