It’s a great week to love Reacher, as star Alan Ritchson confirmed earlier that, even before the premiere of Season 4 on Prime Video, he’s set to start shooting Season 5 imminently. Not only that, but we also got news that he’s set to star in a new blockbuster action movie for Netflix. Part of what makes that movie, Maelstrom, so exciting is that versions of the story date back to 1993, which will ensure that it channels a certain type of movie that we don’t get quite as much of these days.
Understandably, whenever an actor showcases their physical prowess in one project, there’s an immediate call for them to join the world of superheroes. While Ritchson may have come close to sporting a cape or cowl, we haven’t seen him take on one of the many superhero icons that his followers wished he would embrace. Luckily, the actor has plenty of projects that will deliver entirely original experiences.
Keeping the excitement for Ritchson going is that an all-new trailer for his upcoming action thriller Runner has been released. Ritchson stars in the movie alongside Owen Wilson, with this final trailer for the movie confirming that Ritchson won’t only be showcasing his action chops, but also his comedic sensibilities.
Runner is set to hit theaters in September, which Angel Studios describes, “The film follows a former soldier whose latest job pulls him into a brutal race against time. What begins as a critical medical delivery becomes a deadly chase when he and his unexpected companion are betrayed, hunted, and forced to fight their way through impossible odds to save a child’s life.” The movie also stars Rodrigo Santoro, Leila George, Adriana Barraza, Sullivan Stapleton, Peta Sergeant, and Geraldine Hakewill.
As made evident by this trailer, Runner doesn’t look to be holding back on the intensity, with many other Ritchson projects leaning into R-rated themes and brutality. During the development of the movie, there were certain cuts that leaned more into that intensity, which possibly would have secured it that prohibitive rating. Angel Studios, though, has confirmed that the released version of Runner will be PG-13 and that previous trailers weren’t official.
“Immediately upon screening the original cut and discussing it with the team at Angel, we all agreed that the best version of this film was one that could be enjoyed by the widest audience possible and one that focused on the mission of heroes saving a life,” producer Jeffrey Greenstein shared in a statement. “The filmmaking team worked tirelessly with Angel to produce the best version of the film — one that highlights the propulsive and stylized action everyone worked so hard to create — and we couldn’t be more proud that this PG-13 cut will be the one released in theaters worldwide.”
Jon Walter of 2521 Entertainment added, “2521 Entertainment is thrilled to partner with Angel on our upcoming film, Runner. It is a powerful story of courage, resilience, and self-sacrifice that authentically explores the timeless struggle between good and evil. Runner is a compelling, PG-13 feature that delivers both captivating entertainment and meaningful themes that will resonate with audiences.”
In an age where movies will see various cuts released, Angel Studios’ commitment to accessible stories makes it seem unlikely that an R-rated cut of Runner will ever be released in an official capacity.
