Both players carded four-under-par rounds of 66 on a day of warm weather in Southport.
Alex Smalley had led the way on five-under, but a wayward tee shot on the 18th led to a double-bogey. He joins nine other players on three-under-par including Bryson DeChambeau, Robert MacIntyre, and Champion Golfers Collin Morikawa and Francesco Molinari.
