SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) -The biggest tennis tournament of the summer is the South Dakota Open which is this weekend in Sioux Falls.
The South Dakota Open has been around for over 70 years, but when they started paying prize money 10 years ago it really took off.
They had to have qualifier matches last night to pair down the men’s open field to 64.
And many of these players came a long way to be here.
Marc Kurtz, Tournament Director says, “We have international players who are playing here but most of them are college players so they are coming here for this tournament. But we have people flying in for the tournament from North Carolina, Texas, from California. So we get a lot of people coming here and some of them have done the tournament for multiple years now so it’s kind of a tradition for them to play this tournament the 3rd weekend in July. It’s nice to see them re-unite with friends and stuff so it’s great to have that.”
The $22,000 purse is the largest ever and has drawn some great players to Sioux Falls for the 4-day event.
The championship matches are Sunday with women’s singles at 10 and men at noon.
