LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) — As drought conditions continue to worsen across Central Virginia, Lynchburg officials are asking residents and businesses to reduce water use to help protect the city’s water supply.
City leaders say Lynchburg is not facing a water shortage, but they want to take proactive steps to avoid more serious issues if dry conditions persist. They say even small reductions in water use can have a meaningful impact.
“We’re not in deep trouble, but we don’t want to get in trouble,” Lynchburg Mayor Larry Taylor said. “If we conserve just 1% or 2% of what we use, I think it will be helpful.”
Taylor encouraged residents to make simple changes, such as washing vehicles less often and limiting unnecessary outdoor watering.

Local business owners say they are also making an effort to conserve water while continuing to serve customers.
At Miss Joy’s Absolutely Fabulous Treats, owner Tarsha Joyner said employees have adjusted their cleaning routines to reduce water use throughout the day.
“We wash our hands many, many times throughout the day, but we try to conserve on the dishwashing by waiting until the end of the day instead of washing dishes all day long,” Joyner said. “We conserve water any way we can. There’s no need to be wasteful.”
At the Maple Leaf Tea Room, owner Cheryl Carter said water is essential to daily operations, particularly because staff hand-wash dishes and prepare tea throughout the day. Still, she said, employees are being reminded to avoid unnecessary water use.
“What I can do is make my staff aware to be sure we don’t leave water running,” Carter said. “If there’s a way you can do just a little something to help, every little bit helps.”
Lynchburg Water Resources officials said the city is continuing to follow its drought response plan while monitoring reservoir and water supply conditions. Officials said they will implement additional conservation measures if drought conditions continue to worsen.
