Washington Post Opinion Columnist Catherine Rampell tells us that the United States does not have Medicare for all because Americans would not suffer the necessary taxation. This is not true, (“Democrats risk taking the wrong lessons from Trumpism,” July 17).

The United States not only spends twice as much on healthcare as European nations, but our system produces inferior results. Americans die younger and are less healthy than citizens of European countries with universal healthcare.

The United States and Europe have different costs and healthcare outcomes because they use different healthcare systems. The United States has a private, market-based system while Europe has a universal, tax-funded public healthcare system.

Unfortunately, profits are basic to our system and these profits go to Big Pharma, wealthy providers and insurance companies. Those entities, along with conservatives, have for decades blocked our country from moving toward a more affordable and more effective healthcare system that serves all Americans.
