Last year, the Open Championship purse took a break from a steady annual uptick that began in 2017, opting to hold the line at $17 million. But this year, an increase is back. The 2026 Open Championship purse has gone up by $750,000 to $17.75 million.
Despite the record total, the Open Championship remains the least lucrative of the four major championships — and is even well below the PGA Tour’s Signature Event purses of $20 million. This year, the Masters and U.S. Open both offered $22.5 million to their fields, while the PGA Championship put up $20.5 million.
The Players Championship remains the richest purse in golf, with a total purse of $25 million.
This year’s Open Champion will receive $100,000 more than the payout received by the 2025 champion, Scottie Scheffler, with a $3.2 million payday. The runner-up will receive a cool $1.842 million, and third place will clear seven figures too, with a payout of $1.181 million.
Even the players who missed the cut end up generously compensated, with the top 10 players (and ties) on the wrong side of the cut receiving $12,900, the next 20, $10,750, and the remainder of the field receiving $9,100.
