SEATTLE — Youth mental health remains a major concern for families as the debate over phones and social media continues, and new research suggests many parents believe the solution goes beyond simply limiting screen time.

Glen Weiner, executive director of the Coalition to Empower Our Future, discussed findings from the group’s new research and how families can build healthier digital habits.

The research suggests most parents do not believe restricting phones alone is the answer. It also points to digital literacy as a priority for both kids and parents, and indicates many parents worry heavy technology restrictions could have unintended consequences.

Weiner also addressed ways families can help children build healthier digital habits without completely disconnecting them from technology, along with the role schools, educators and communities can play in supporting young people’s mental health alongside parents.

The discussion also included practical steps for parents who may feel overwhelmed by the amount of advice available.
