Back in 1984—just before the Chicago Bulls selected the University of North Carolina star in the NBA draft—David Falk signed Michael Jordan to his sports agency. Armed with a bold vision, Falk aimed to transform the charismatic rookie into an iconic personal brand. He pitched Jordan to Nike, demanding an independent product line rather than a standard endorsement.
Nike responded with a groundbreaking five-year, $2.5 million contract that included a revolutionary 5-percent sales royalty. While Nike included a clause to void the deal if sales didn’t reach $4 million within three years, the black-and-red sneaker with the prominent swoosh—nicknamed “Air Jordan” by Falk—shattered all expectations. In its debut year alone, the line generated a staggering $126 million in revenue.

Falk went on to manage Jordan for the entirety of his 15-season career. He also represented over 100 other players, becoming widely known as the most influential NBA player agent. At his peak in the 1990s, he was often considered the second-most powerful person in the NBA behind commissioner David Stern, and he had at least one client on all but two teams in 2000. He was also portrayed by actor Chris Messina in the 2023 film Air, directed by Ben Affleck.
The longstanding success allowed Falk and his wife, Rhonda, to purchase a couple of adjacent oceanfront lots on South Carolina‘s Kiawah Island near Charleston, spending about $16 million to custom build a sprawling maritime-themed home. Completed in 2006, with a lighthouse-inspired central column, porthole windows, and a marble compass set into the stone entry floor, the 1.24-acre spread has now returned to market for $25 million, with Doug Lee of Kiawah Island Real Estate holding the listing. The property will set a sales record for Kiawah Island if it fetches anywhere near its asking price.

Designed by Washington, D.C.-based architect Jerry Harpole, the creamy stucco and black-shuttered structure spans three levels. The roughly 8,800-square-foot residence includes six bedrooms, seven full bathrooms, and a powder room and features nautical-inspired interiors distinguished by hardwood floors, shiplap walls, and coffered ceilings.
A traditional double wedding staircase at the front leads to an entry tower that opens into the home’s main living space. Here, a soaring, nearly 60-foot-long living room topped with a large oval gallery is surrounded by walls of glass overlooking the curving coastline. A dining area connects to a kitchen accented with perforated metal cabinetry, while a wall screens off a two-story primary suite. There’s also a fitness room attached to a screened-in porch.

Meanwhile, the palm-laced backyard holds a 110-foot swimming pool with a waterfall, flanked by dual pavilions with a spa and fireplace. A private boardwalk leads down to 200 feet of private beach frontage.
A Kiawah Island Club golf membership is also available with the purchase of the property, offering exclusive access to both the Cassique and River courses. Additional amenities include a 9,000-square-foot fitness facility, beach clubs, five-star restaurants, a full-service spa, and a boathouse.
