A woman prompted the temporary closure of the 5 Freeway in both directions through Valencia Friday evening after climbing over a chain-link fence on the Valencia Boulevard overpass, according to California Highway Patrol traffic logs.

The incident was first reported shortly before 5:40 p.m. when CHP received reports of a thin blonde woman wearing a blue shirt climbing onto the outside of the fence above the southbound lanes of Interstate 5.

Officials noted the woman was on the freeway side of the protective fencing, prompting an immediate response from the California Highway Patrol, the Los Angeles County Fire Department and deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

As emergency personnel worked to safely resolve the situation, CHP initiated traffic breaks and eventually shut down both northbound and southbound Interstate 5 at Valencia Boulevard. A SigAlert was issued at approximately 5:52 p.m. for an unknown duration.

In addition to the freeway closure, eastbound Valencia Boulevard traffic over Interstate 5 was blocked and diverted back toward The Old Road. Motorists traveling on the freeway experienced significant delays as traffic was diverted off the interstate at Valencia Boulevard.

Traffic restrictions gradually began to lift after 6 p.m. Southbound lanes reopened first, followed by the northbound on-ramp and remaining freeway lanes.

By approximately 6:26 p.m., all freeway lanes had reopened, with the exception of the Valencia Boulevard overpass and the eastbound Valencia Boulevard on-ramp to northbound Interstate 5. The SigAlert was canceled shortly afterward.

Authorities have not released additional information about the woman or the circumstances leading up to the incident. Her condition was not immediately available.

No injuries were reported, and the incident remains under investigation.
