GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources reported several manatee sightings off the state’s coast.
Officials said that when the water is warm, Florida manatees migrate north to enjoy the abundant aquatic vegetation that South Carolina has to offer.
Biologists are working towards better understanding manatees’ behaviors, patterns and chosen locations while in South Carolina water, according to officials, and reporting sightings contributes to manatees’ conservation.

SCDNR recommends following these practices if a manatee is seen:
View from a distance so as not to disturb the animal.Never provide fresh water (including a hose) or food to manatees – they do not need anything from humans. This trains the animal to approach humans, docks, and boats, which puts them at risk for boat strikes. In addition, it is illegal, as this is categorized as harassment.Wear polarized sunglasses to better see manatees through the water’s surface.Check around boat motors before cranking the engine. Manatees may be hanging around nearby.
