IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – Last week, the U.S. Marshals Service arrested 61 people in Iowa in four days.
The United States Marshals Southern Iowa Fugitive Task Force carried out what it called an “aggressive fugitive enforcement initiative” from July 21 to July 24, titled Operation Heatwave.
It also shared some of the prominent arrests that were carried out in central Iowa as part of the operation.
“Operation Heatwave demonstrates what can be accomplished when federal, state, and local law enforcement work together to make our communities safer,” U.S. Marshal Ted Kamatchus for the Southern District of Iowa said in a statement. “Locating and arresting the most dangerous offenders remains one of the highest priorities of the U.S. Marshals Service.”
Iowa City arrest
Immigrant advocacy group Escucha Mi Voz says the arrests are connected to an arrest made on a busy Iowa City street.
On July 23, US Marshals carried out an arrest on South Riverside Drive, near the Highway 1 West intersection in Iowa City.
Escucha Mi Voz said that “despite the military-style tactics used in a busy public area, the individual taken into custody was not arrested for a violent criminal offense.”
Officials have not said if this arrest was part of Operation Heatwave.
The U.S. Marshals also attribute the Coralville Police Department in assisting with Operation Heatwave. The department told Escucha Mi Voz that one of its detectives is also a task force officer and was involved in the operation.
The group is asking the U.S. Marshals Service to share information on each arrest, as well as every officer involved in the July 23 arrest.
