The Round of 16 gets underway at the inaugural WTA Memphis Classic with several fascinating contests featuring seeded players, qualifiers and rising talents. With quarterfinal places on the line and the North American hard-court swing beginning to take shape, every match carries added significance as players look to build momentum ahead of the bigger tournaments in August. As always, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for every match on the schedule. But who will advance?
WTA Memphis Day 3 Predictions
Zeynep Sonmez vs Elvina Kalieva
Head-to-Head: First meeting
Sonmez has quietly pieced together one of the most consistent seasons of her career. The Turkish No. 1 has become increasingly comfortable on hard courts, using her speed and disciplined baseline game to frustrate opponents before stepping forward to finish points. As the fourth seed, she arrives with expectations but has generally handled that pressure well.
Kalieva earned her place in the second round with an impressive performance over qualifier Katherine Sebov. The American’s aggressive first-strike tennis suits these conditions, and playing at home should only add to her confidence. She will look to dictate with her forehand and shorten rallies whenever possible.
This has the makings of a close contest between two players who enjoy hard courts. Kalieva’s power should create plenty of opportunities, but Sonmez’s consistency and movement give her the tools to absorb that pressure and gradually turn the match in her favour.

Iryna Shymanovich vs Katie Volynets
Head-to-Head: First meeting
Shymanovich has made the most of her opportunity in Memphis, coming through qualifying before extending her stay with a composed straight-sets victory in the opening round. The Belarusian has competed with confidence from the baseline and has looked comfortable adapting her game to the quicker courts.
Volynets produced one of the biggest results of the opening round by upsetting third seed Viktorija Golubic in a hard-fought three-set battle. The American defended superbly when under pressure and showed plenty of resilience after falling behind in the deciding set. Playing in front of a home crowd should give her another lift.
Shymanovich’s consistency should keep the rallies competitive, but Volynets’ superior hard-court pedigree and confidence from her opening-round win make her the more convincing choice to advance.

Tatjana Maria vs Renata Zarazua
Head-to-Head: Maria 1-1 Zarazua
Maria once again proved how dangerous her unconventional style can be, using her trademark slice, variety. and frequent net approaches to work her way into the second round. Few players change the rhythm of a match as effectively as the German, making her a difficult opponent regardless of the surface. Her experience has been a valuable asset during the opening week in Memphis.
Zarazua has continued her encouraging season with another strong showing to reach the last 16. Although clay remains her most successful surface, the Mexican has become a more complete hard-court player, relying on her consistency, court coverage and ability to redirect pace to stay competitive against bigger hitters.
This should feature plenty of long rallies and tactical exchanges. Zarazua has the patience to stay with Maria’s variety, but the German’s ability to constantly disrupt rhythm and create awkward patterns has already worked against the Mexican in their previous meeting. That experience could prove decisive once again.

Camila Osorio vs Anastasia Zakharova
Head-to-Head: First meeting
Osorio made a confident start to her Memphis campaign, defeating qualifier Storm Hunter in straight sets. The Colombian’s speed, consistency and ability to transition from defence to attack remain her greatest strengths, particularly on outdoor hard courts where she has become increasingly comfortable.
Zakharova also impressed in the opening round, defeating Linda Fruhvirtova for the third time this season. The Russian struck the ball cleanly throughout that match and looked composed during the key moments, continuing the steady progress she has made over recent months.
This could easily be one of the best matches of the day. Zakharova has the firepower to hit through the court, but Osorio’s movement and ability to extend rallies often force opponents into playing one extra shot. Over the course of the match, that consistency should prove decisive.
