MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is seeking community scientists to help monitor deer and game bird populations statewide.
Operation Deer Watch and Game Bird Survey help DNR scientists measure the reproductive status of deer and game birds. The surveys establish adult-to-juvenile ratios and provide data to support wildlife-management decisions.
For Operation Deer Watch, participants can report the age, sex, location and number of deer they see from dawn to dusk during the summer. The data helps the DNR estimate the deer population, with observations due on Sept. 30.
The Game Bird Survey collects information on the types and number of game bird broods observed during the summer. Observations are due Aug. 31. According to the DNR, the information helps monitor game bird reproduction during the breeding year.
“The more data that is collected, the better our understanding of game species abundance and distribution in Wisconsin,” said Paul Frater, DNR survey coordinator. “The DNR encourages everyone interested in wildlife — from hunters and trappers to outdoor enthusiasts — to take part.”
Participants can submit sightings through the Survey123 app using a mobile device. Registration is not required. People observing from a vehicle should record sightings only when the vehicle is stopped, not while driving.
