PORTLAND (WGME) — More sharks are showing up in Maine.

For the second day in a row, Scarborough police are reporting more sharks were spotted off Pine Point.

Scarborough police say a drone operator monitoring the area spotted five to seven sharks off Pine Point.

They were seen swimming and feeding near the shore.

Police say there are no reported injuries, and the increase in sharks is because of increased availability of baitfish and seals.

Wednesday’s sightings are in addition to two sharks spotted in the same area Tuesday.

The New England Aquarium is warning people that we’re entering peak shark season, so watch out when you head out onto the water.

On Tuesday, police say there were two confirmed juvenile great white sharks spotted off Prouts Neck in Scarborough, not far from shore.

The video shows a paddleboarder out fishing when he encountered the sharks.

The New England Aquarium says right now, people need to be “shark smart”:

Don’t isolate if you’re out on the water.

Don’t swim near schools of fish or seals.

Don’t make commotion. That could draw the attention of a curious shark.

“The sharks, we know they’re not here for humans,” New England Aquarium Adjunct Scientist John Chisholm said. “We know they’re here for their natural prey, but we have had incidents with fatalities both in Maine and Mass over the last several years.”

The aquarium says a lot of the reported sightings it’s received are actually just ocean sunfish, which are harmless, but that shouldn’t stop people from reporting if they think they see something like a shark in the water.
