Humpback whales are making more appearances along the Maine coast.

Researchers at the College of the Atlantic say they’ve seen a surge in nearshore humpback whale sightings, likely because more food is available.

Boaters are reminded to stay at least 100 yards away from humpback whales to avoid disturbing the animals.

Researchers also encourage anyone who safely photographs a whale to share those images to help identify and track the animals.
