HILLSBORO, Ore. (KATU) — A garbage fire broke out Saturday afternoon at the Waste Management facility outside of Hillsboro, fire officials said.

The fire was initially reported at about 4:30 p.m. at the facility off of SE Minter Bridge Road.

Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue said its crews have a line around the trash fire and they’re working to extinguish the blaze. There were no reports of injuries.

Embers from the garbage fire kicked up and sparked a brush fire in an adjacent field. Firefighters are now working to extinguish the second fire which started south of the dump.

Images on social media showed large columns of smoke rising from the area near the waste facility.

People are being asked to avoid the area.
