Kentucky defensive coordinator Jay Bateman spent two seasons at Florida from 2022-23. When an opportunity to run his own defense in Lexington emerged in 2026, the 53-year-old knew he needed to bring one of his former players with him after he entered the transfer portal.

Aaron Gates is staying in the SEC after spending his first three seasons with the Gators. The defensive back starter was added to Kentucky’s roster to be a plug-and-play starter in 2026. This former four-star recruit from Georgia will be plugged into the highly important Star (or nickel) position in Bateman’s scheme. Kentucky’s defensive play caller has a lot of confidence in this veteran.

“I’ve seen him do it in this league at a really high level. I was with him when he was a young kid and I saw kind of the potential,” Bateman told the media on Saturday. “I think he’s a really good player, man.”

After redshirting in 2023, Gates finished the 2024 season with 27 tackles, four tackles for loss, three pass breakups, and an interception in 322 snaps. Injuries (ACL, torn labrum) have been an issue throughout his career, but Kentucky believes this player can be a game-changer for the defense in 2026.

“He can do a lot. Aaron Gates can go play corner tomorrow, right? So you got a kid with corner skills who’s got big body who can blitz, can play man. I think he’s a really well-respected kid in this league,” Bateman said. “I think the main thing with Aaron Gates is keeping his body right and healthy. I think he feels really good right now — knock on wood.”

The No. 1 goal will be to keep Gates healthy. If he is on the field, this is a player that can do everything in the slot. That makes the defensive back a valuable piece of this Kentucky football team. The expectations are high for this defensive back who brings a lot to the table.

“That kid loves football,” said Bateman.

Luckett’s Scouting Notebook: Aaron Gates

Kentucky is making a defensive scheme switch in 2026. A more aggressive style of football will be played. The nickel position will be critical. The Cats will ask Florida transfer Aaron Gates to do a lot of things.

This was my scouting write-up on the SEC transfer.

The former four-star recruit out of Sharpsburg (Ga.) Trinity Christian spent three seasons at Florida playing for head coach Billy Napier. Gates is a safety who found a home playing nickel in a 4-2-5 simulated pressure-heavy scheme that will be similar to what Kentucky utilizes with new defensive coordinator Jay Bateman. The defensive back took a redshirt in year one but had a big role in year two when he finished the season with 27 tackles, four tackles for loss, three pass breakups, and an interception in 322 snaps. Modern nickel defender who can cover up the seam, trigger downhill, and be an effective blitzer. The tape against Georgia in 2024 was impressive with good eyes leading to an interception and an impressive open-field tackle for loss.

Gates dealt with an ACL and torn labrum that ended two seasons prematurely over three years at Florida. Availability is a concern but this is a versatile defensive back with SEC experience who should be a plug-and-play starter at nickel.
