Miami Hurricanes defensive lineman Mykah Newton spoke with CanesInSight about his weight gain along with his bond with Jarquez Carter. Catch everything he had to say down below:
On his weight gain: Honestly it was amazing. I love the weight. I feel very more explosive, kind of wish I was this weight in high school, just not knowing how much that I can be productive at this weight, and moving still quick and very fast. A very phenomenal thing. I appreciate the coaching staff, so I love it.
On what he weights: I think I came in like 258, now I’m like 280. So it’s crazy. I’m so glad that I put it on the right weight because I know, Lord knows in high school, it would have been a different type of weight.
On how adding weight helped him: I would say the strength and also just knowing how to use my strength. It’s been the most best thing. I’m honestly learning new things about myself every day, so it’s kind of amazing, knowing what I can do.
On being reunited with Jarquez Carter at Miami: Amazing, that’s my brother, but still the whole thing is to do is go in every day, get ready for this fall camp.
On Damione Lewis: He’s a very great coach, man. He’s very understandable, and he knows what kind of player you are, so he gonna help you make sure that you know how to do these, he gonna help you make sure you also do stuff the right way. Just make sure you can be the best player you can in general.
On playing in an athletic defensive scheme: I love it. We play very well and very free, I love it. Trust me, I love it.
On the defensive line veterans who have helped him: Ahmad Moten, Justin Scott, them boys are very huge help. They big brothers to me, I call them boys big bro every day. They know I can go talk to them about anything, man. I love them boys for sure, and they most definitely want me to play, so they gonna make sure I get right. They gonna hold me accountable and make sure I be the best I can.
On where he has improved: I would say mentality and also maturity. You gotta mature with the game, especially coming in young. But I feel like once that maturity level hit I kinda know everything now, so, that’s kinda the huge thing that I feel like. And also adjusting, and really being able to handle some adversity. That was a huge thing.
On his mentality: Just dominate. So I’m from Gainesville. Not a lot of people come out of there, so I try my hardest, just to prove everybody wrong. I did so much to just sacrifice so much time, and I’m dedicated to show everybody what I can do.
