The number 11 seed hit seven aces in the contest, breaking her opponent’s serve thrice en route to victory. Osaka now leads the head-to-head 2-1, and will take on Rybakina in the quarter-finals.
02:00 CET – Defending champion Ben Shelton is through to the quarter-finals in Montreal after defeating Joao Fonseca 6-3, 7-6 (3).
The Brazilian had more than double the number of unforced errors to winners in the match (32 to 15) as he had went up a break in the second set only to fall in a tiebreak. Shelton will face the winner of the late match in the next round.
23:10 CET – A composed performance from Coco Gauff has seen her through in Canada as she beats Alina Korneeva 6-3, 6-1.
The American was in charge throughout, converting seven of 12 break points whilst not conceding a game on her serve.

Tirante made 38 unforced errors in the defeat, something that he will need to improve.
